Wow! We're only one week away from Christmas! It's hard to believe that another year has come and gone. Christmas carols with lines like "over the river and through the wooods, to Grandmother's house we go!" evoke fond memories of Christmas experiences. As a matter of fact, I'd be willing to bet that your most vivid Christmas memeories involve experiences with friends and family rather than having recieved a particular physical item!
As scuba divers, it would, of course, be really nice to unwrap a new mask or even a new regulator on Christmas morning, but wouldn't it be even nicer to unwrap a gift certificate for a new scuba diving experience? Something like a new certification, a membership to a local Dive Club, or even a trip to some exotic dive location? That's the stuff real memories are made of! A recent study has shown that we receive far more satisfaction from experiential gifts than from physical ones. Believe it or not, 80% of people that participated in a survey that covered all demographics, stated that they would be happier to receive the gift of experience than a new piece of dive equipment!
Furthermore, studies have also proven that shared family experiences enhance a family's well-being. As for children, these experiences give them a stronger sense of identity and security. Also, kids who have positive family memories show fewer behavioral problems and higher rates of academic success. As corny as it might sound, it seems to be true that a family that dives together stays together!
This year, why not give the gift the gift that will continue to give and give and give for a lifetime? Consider gifting your family and/or friends a memory rather than a disposable present by booking them on a scuba diving holiday, or signing them up for a dive class. Give the gift the that will truly be appreciated and never, ever forgotten, give the gift of Scuba Diving this year!
